Getting to work with elite athletes and getting to know them on a personal level and even play a part in their journey is both rewarding and fascinating. It offers us a unique perspective where we get to see trends and similarities between athletes.
If there is one thing that we've seen stand out is the need for athletes to optimize their personal branding. Rightfully for some, having a valuable brand is worth hundreds of thousands of dollars per year. For others, it helps them get the equipment or support they need.
Either way, the ability for an athlete to craft, and grow his athlete branding is crucial. It dictates the flow of sponsorship deals, media attention and speaking engagements. It's also what rallies and inspires communities and fans.
Somehow though, when it comes to actually do it, it's the 'Far West'. There is no real guide or resources on the matter. It seem to be dark arts or something.
It's a slippery road. Building your brand and dealing with sponsorship can also be tricky. I failed at it: too many sponsors put too much pressure on me. #lessonslearned
